Advanced Ag is a new generation ag input supplier. With the rapid growth of acres per farmer and a reduction in the number of farmers in the Midwest, there has been a change in the retail ag business to serve these growers. Ag retailers have always offered great service to the growers they served. The service was always included in the price of the product they purchased. Two major things have changed this.

1) Growers acquiring more acres have the ability to justify their own application equipment. Also these growers are willing to accept the responsibilities of their application. This gives them an opportunity to separate the service from the product. With the majority of ag retailers carrying the same products, it allows the grower to shop for the best pricing scenario. Not that the application concerns are out of the way. Service of product is still very important, as is convenience and trust in recommendations.

2) Glyphosate - With the boom of Roundup Ready soybeans, growers are now able to apply a product for total weed control that involves far less service. With generic products coming to the market place, growers are willing to take on the responsibility of these products and their performance for the additional cost savings. Many times this equates to 3 to 5 dollars per acre savings.

Distributors are also caught up in this scenario. They have a relationship with the major chemical companies to supply to retailer's brand name products. For doing this there is a reward, obviously! The generic business would and could be huge if promoted by the industry.

This whole situation will be very difficult to adjust to in the retail business. Roundup Ready crops will not be the norm forever. Things will change. For the short term retailers will have to adjust and they will survive.
